Sali Berisha was asked today about the imprisonment of his political opponent Fatos Nano 30 years ago, and gave a convenient answer given the situation he is in, under investigation by the SPAK prosecutor’s office.

“Fatos Nano has been arrested for an abuse which, according to the calculations of his own SP government, $10 million humanitarian aid for hungry Albanians disappeared”, said Berisha, referring to the former first president of the SP in the 1990s.

But Berisha, not out of ignorance or lack of information, forgot the important fact that former Prime Minister Fatos Nano continued the legal battle until June 1999 and won his innocence by justifying the position of the SP, at that time in the opposition, that their president was a political prisoner from Sali Berisha.

Fatos Nano, the former leader of the socialists, was arrested in the Fatos Dervishi prosecutor’s office on July 30, 1993.

He was accused of abusing the aid fund of the Italian Government.

According to the prosecutors, among whom Genc Gjokutaj, today Berisha’s lawyer, Fatos Nano had violated the procedure for the purchase of goods by dictating the firm where these goods would be purchased.

In the year of unrest in 1997, when the prisons were broken up, Nano did not leave the prison but addressed a request to the former Minister of Justice at the time, who gave the OK to go to the family.

A week later, the then president Sali Berisha, would sign the pardon of his political opponent.

Socialists insisted then and still insist that the imprisonment of their leader was entirely political, orchestrated by Sali Berisha.
