The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, declared from Kukes that the
Parliament should summon this Monday to vote the three European Union
integration laws.
Berisha’s declaration arrived after the repeated appeal of the Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, to vote a consensus package for the three laws.
“The Albanian Parliament will gather this Monday to vote the laws. We will go with a clear conscience, because we did everything possible to deserve the candidate status, and because we have demanded the voting of the laws every single day”, Berisha declared.
The Socialist Movement for Integration leader, Ilir Meta, had made his last political appeal for voting the three laws a few hours before Berisha released this statement, by thanking the Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama, for what Meta called a “clear availability” by the Socialist Party. Meta explained once again what the compromise package was.
“This is the time for the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, to show the same availability so that we can vote these laws in the upcoming days and give a responsible message. This is a compromise that will bring only benefits to the ‘Doctor’ (Berisha), since he says that he believes in victories. The three laws can pass now and their implementation might start on September”, Meta declared.
But the time when the laws enter in effect, especially the law for the Administrative Court, might be a stalemate for the session of this Monday, because this issue is bigger than just a technical passing of the three laws. The time when the law enters in effect decides which government will appoint the new judges.
The opposition has criticized the recent appointments, especially at the Constitutional Court, saying that the names were suspicious and politically biased. This is something that only the Parliament’s vote will show.
Solving the crisis at CEC
As for the crisis at the Central Election Commission, Meta says that this institution needs its legitimacy back, as the only solution to this stalemate.
“It is the easiest thing to ask the appointments of new names that will fill the vacancies, but those are not just jobs. The main issue here is the integrity of the Central Election Commission, which has been damaged in a violent and unjust way by the current majority. The main issue is on how will we implement consensus and trust at the Central Election Commission. It is up to the majority to show reflection and responsibility on this direction”, Meta declared.
