Berisha: Welcoming opposition’s motions

The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, blamed the opposition for Albania’s stalemate in the EU integration process.

During an interview for Voice of America, Berisha declared from New York that the stalemate came as result of the opposition’s blocking policies.

“Brussels has done its duty. The blocking is in Tirana. If we have waited until the last day for not voting the laws and the reforms, this has had only one goal, that of blocking the process”, Berisha declared.

According to him, the work for the electoral reform doesn’t belong to Brussels, but to Tirana.

“This belongs to those who have chosen to block a process that requires a qualified majority. The opposition is known for its blockings, they did this with the visa too, but didn’t achieve their goal, because the visas didn’t require a qualified majority”, Berisha added.

However, the Prime Minister expressed his optimism for starting a new chapter for implementing the reforms, especially the electoral ones, in full accordance with the international recommendations.

“However, we can leave it to the past and vote the new laws, for making the electoral reform according the OSCE-ODIHR recommendations for the elections. Albania’s candidate status has been assigned with the condition that these recommendations will be fulfilled”, Berisha declared.

“The government has fulfilled and is still fulfilling the recommendations that do not require a qualified majority. But the opposition has used its power given by the citizens not for voting, but for blocking, as they did with the visa. I hope that they have taken the right lessons by the blocking policy, because the citizens gave the deserved response to this policy on May 8th elections”, the Prime Minister declared.

“In 2009, the reform was made in an optimal time. It can be made even now. We welcome the opposition’s propositions. It is their right to ask for these laws to be reviewed in the Parliamentary commissions, but we wish that this will not be a blocking tactic”, Berisha declared.

The government leader repeated the declarations that he released from the New York Nasdaq market, one day ago, and on the prestigious US TV Channel, CNBC, that Albania is not affected by the Greek debt crisis.

“The investments in Albania increased with 315%, the exports with 300%. We realized the programs of public works in a record time. Taking all of these in consideration, it is true that the crisis has had its reflection. If not for the crisis, the economic growth in Albania would not be 3 and 4%, but 13%”, Berisha added.

As regards the international matters that are being treated in the UN General Assembly, Berisha was asked by VOA by Palestine, for which he declared that is needed an intensive dialogue.
