Berisha: We won even in Tirana

The Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha held a speech in the assembly
of the National Council, as the leader of the political party and
coalition that won May 8th locations in 100 local units and with 140,000
votes more than the opposition coalition in a national scale. (UPDATE)

Listing this as the fourth victory after 2005, when he returned to power, the Prime Minister considered the victory of Tirana as historical, where the leader of the opposition Edi Rama and former Interior Minister, Lulzim Basha, conducted a very close battle, with Basha resulting as winner.

In his analysis in front of the National Council, which gathered to elect the 24 members of the Democratic Party, the Prime Minister declared that May 8th victory was a plebiscite trust given by the Albanians to the reforms of his government.

“This was the answer given by the citizens in their referendum. The crown of this victory is the heart of Tirana. In Tirana, the civil moral confronted the mafia and its tentacles that had grabbed the Albanian capital for 11 consequent years without any mercy”, Berisha declared.

During his speech that lasted more than 1 hour, Prime Minister Berisha considered as a triumph not only the elections result, but also the functioning of the rule of law. For this he referred to the long legal battle of Tirana, where miscast ballots were also counted, a procedure that was considered as legally unclear by the United States. Defending the decisions of the Central Election Commission and the Electoral College, the Albanian Prime Minister declared that the rules of the game did not change during the process.

“There is no one today who can say that one can be based on a single fake vote. The Central Election Commission did not change any rules.  I invite them to come and show us what principle was changed. Same as the Courts of developed countries, the Albanian institutions decided to count each vote, including that of the President”, Berisha added.

After guaranteeing cooperation with all new mayors, regardless their political affiliation, in order to achieve the objective “Albania, a developed country”, Prime Minister Sali Berisha dedicated a considerable time to the political actions of his rival, Edi Rama, for whom he said that has avoided the main figures of his party by cooperating with former collaborators of Berisha himself.

“Therefore I appeal our supporters to not be confused with whom they are supporting, they must not confuse the electors of the Socialist Party or other opposing parties with the stances of a given group of people”, Berisha declared.

But the Prime Minister did not leave it with that. By guaranteeing that he is ready to dialogue for the reforms in the constitution and the electoral law at any time, Berisha allowed himself to advise Edi Rama to give up to boycotts, in order to become a dignified rival for the Prime Ministry.

“Rama has the gift to project defeat after defeat for himself. Has the gift to fail in every initiative. The opponent is needed for a difficult time, as an alternative, but Rama feels that he is more important when he boycotts than when he votes. He believes that this is how he will gain credibility. These are his calculations. I believe that the road of crime against the credibility, of the citizens’ trust, is not a boycott, but it is exerting one’s power to serve the alternative”, Berisha declared, promising that he will be very loyal to the Albanian laws, values and Constitution.

Berisha presented a list with 42 names for the members of the assembly, but he also urged the members of the DP National Council to collect the necessary signatures for adding new candidacies. But the list of the Democratic Party leader remained unchanged.
