Berisha: “No vetting of judges by international partners”

The former Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, spoke about the
justice reform and accused PM Rama of excluding the opposition from the
process.

“The word consensus does not exist for Edi Rama, who is led by the highest human hate. He celebrated the 1-million-punch victory against the opposition. On this base he built the commission of high-level experts”, Berisha said.

According to him, these experts were people close to the Prime Minister. He said that these people were paid to draft a project with 70 constitutional articles, which guarantee that the eldest Judge of the Supreme Court to be appointed at the Justice Control Forum, with a 600.000 ALL salary. The opposition sent this material to Venice, and they blocked it for one month because Venice made it clear what kind of justice they were looking for. They wanted Rama to be Chief Prosecutor and Chief Judge.

He explained that the position of the DP in this process is for the international partners having an important role in the vetting process, but not for them to appoint judges. “We cannot give them our sovereignty”, Berisha declared.

The former Prime Minister said that the proposition that does not allow the international partners to be involved in the process, is “excellent and negotiable”.

The Chairman of the Special Commission for Justice Reform, Fatmir Xhafaj, said that the international partners have only a procedural role and that the opposition is afraid of the reform. The Venice Commission, according to Xhafaj, congratulates these experts for their work with the draft.

“The first problem you have is with the vetting, which cleans the justice system from corrupted criminals tied to the world of crime. The second problem is related to the Special Prosecution, the Bureau of Investigation. You say that they were changed by the Venice Commission, but it is not. This is the bitter truth.”, Xhafaj said.

Xhafaj explained that it is a lie that the international partners will appoint judges. “They only evaluate the 21 people who will make the vetting process and will only have a procedural role”, Xhafaj said.
