Battle for the pipeline

Albania is not still assured for its involvement in the international gas
network. Currently there are three competing projects for transporting
gas from the coastlines of the Caspian Sea to Europe. Two of them
exclude passage through Albania.

“The winner will be the project that will guarantee the support of the shareholders who own the Shah Denizi field in Azerbaijan, from where the pipeline will be supplied”, declared Dorian Ducka, representative from the Ministry of Economy.

Trans Adriatic, the project that supports the passage through Albania declared that it will present its offer on October 1st 2011.

If this project will fail, Albania will remain out of the pipeline system, at least as a main actor.

The European Union supports the project Nabucco, while the Greek Diplomacy is lobbing for its Italian-Greek project.

In these conditions, Albania’s only chances in this geopolitical battle remain the companies that support the project that involves the passage through our country, the German giant Statoil and EU Rugras Gas.
