The Democratic Party is unhappy with the way how the government is
managing the country’s economy. They communicated their concern about
what they consider a wrong course of the economy to the World Bank and
the International Monetary Fund.
In a special meeting with Tahsin Sayed of the World Bank, and Nadim Ilahi from the International Monetary Fund, the Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, spoke about lower revenues not only compared to previous periods, but also compared to the government’s expectations. According to the opposition leader, revenue collection has significantly dropped with 38% in the first trimester, and this is a clear indicator of the tax evasion, corruption and the increased informality.
The opposition says that the legal uncertainty created by the government is negatively affecting the economic progress. According to Basha, this has scared investors away and has directly affected the country’s unemployment, or it has diminished the chances for finding a job.
The Democratic Party leader says that the drastic reduction of the VAT reimbursement has influenced this climate of uncertainty. Basha also noted that the government has increased the procedures in the direct procurement practices, for which the opposition has demanded official information through the Parliament, but the government has not answered yet. The official announcement of the Democratic Party quotes only Mr.Basha and doesn’t mention the stance held by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund leaders, the two institutions that are monitoring the country’s economic progress.
