The race for the new Democratic Party leader is officially open. Lulzim
Basha and Sokol Olldazhi will compete against each other for 18 days,
time that the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, sees as important
not only for the members, but also for the candidates.
“The new leader will be voted on July 22nd. The duty of the Democratic Party is to give the most decent process. I believe that both candidates are prepared to accept the verdict of the members”, Berisha declared.
The official candidates also confirmed that they will accept the result in the speeches that they gave before this unprecedented campaign for the Democratic Party.
“We’re not holding a campaign in unknown territory, but in the structures of our party, which we know very well. I want to thank the leadership for the decision and I am convinced that we will hold a decent and very positive race, which will give to the Democratic Party the possibility to judge and take a good decision on July 22nd”, Olldashi declared.
“The leadership decided to make the candidacies official. I want to express my gratitude for this decision, and my conviction that we will come out more determined and united from this process”, Basha declared.
Both candidates will hold a divided campaign, an Sali Berisha declared that he would take care for organizing the meetings with each of them.
He asked the party structures to not hesitate and hold campaigns for the candidate that they want, but first they must resign in order to not affect the vote of the other members. By asking the leadership to not make any interventions, Sali Berisha reconfirmed his neutral stance.
“This is a special time for you. You should reject every intervention. There will be interventions from those who control the media from worlds that have nothing in common with us, foreign charlatans who forget that when they try to intervene this way, they are doing nothing more than shouting from a pile of trash. But your integrity is higher than anyone else. I ask the Democratic Party leadership to reject every intervention. There will be zero intervention from Sali Berisha. Our duty is to bring this process to victory”, Berisha declared.
