Basha, 24 hours to reconsider McAllister package. Yee: “Elections are valid without DP”

It seems that the USA are doing everything possible to not allow the Albanian opposition boycott the elections.

The envoy of official Washington, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Hoyt Brian Yee, turned his last visit into an international intermediation one, before the country entered next elections without the opposition.

The “McAllister package” offer now is back, which gives the opposition one Deputy Prime Minister, (now that the President was voted) something Rama had already offered, and four Ministers.

After meeting with newly voted President Ilir Meta, who was in favor of this package, Yee met with Basha in presence of US Ambassador Donald Lu, and with other opposition allies joining them later.

The meeting lasted more than one hour and did not produce any result. It only gave the Democratic Party 24 hours time to return to this package with some corrections, due to the developments that took places since McAllister’s visit.

And this is not only because the President is voted, but also because the majority are convinced that the elections cannot be held one day later than June 18th.

Ilir Meta also said on Top Channel’s Top Story, a few days ago, that it was impossible to postpone the elections later than July 16th.

But the Democratic Party, besides demanding a technical government, also wants electronic voting. If the majority brings facts that it cannot be realized, the opposition demands biometric identification and electronic voting.

For this, according to the opposition, they need to postpone elections until Autumn. No one can say if the parties seriously want to reach an agreement, or if they only aim to blame the opponents for its failure.

However, Yee brought several messages which the opposition must take seriously. First, they stated that Washington doesn’t believe that the government wants to manipulate the elections, and they can guarantee it.

Secondly, the elections are valid even without the opposition, a phrase that was mentioned by Prime Minister Rama as well, one day ago.

Thirdly, the boycott damages the country and the Democratic Party, meaning that the damage bill will be sent to the DP leadership, who also have to calculate this.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State met this Monday with Majlinda Bregu and Jozefina Topalli, and even received from a distance the careful support of Patozi, while Selami was in the USA, but his already expressed pro-American stance makes his meeting with Yee almost redundant.

When asked if these meetings show that the USA were looking for alternative voices from within the Democratic Party, Yee confirmed it.

A similar stance was held in the letter of the EU Commissioner, Johannes Hahn. Now everyone knows who is responsible for the crisis. They have 24 hours before they are identified as the ones to be blamed.
