“Bankers”, Natural Resources Agency addresses Court of Arbitration

The government decided to file a complaint against the decision of
international experts regarding the issue with “Bankers”, as announced
by the National Agency of Natural Resources.

“The NANR believes that this sensible case received attention from all actors in this process, and, as such, it will receive fair judgment at the Court of Arbitration, because we are convinced that the elements found in the audit report, rejected by experts, are enough for the court to rule in favor of the Albanian government”, NANR says.

This decision was taken after a wide consultation with the Ministry of Energy and Industry, and with the State Advocacy.

The conflict between Bankers and the Government started in 2011, when NANR claimed the company declared 299 million USD of unjustified costs, hiding 57 million USD in taxes.

In September 2016, the expert panel made of “Price Water House and Coopers”, and “Navigant”, ruled in favor of the Canadian company, a decision that forced Albania to return 37 million USD in taxes and withdraw claims for 20 million others.

According to the report of experts, only 22 million USD out of 299 are justified, while the rest are fair costs.
