For five years in duty as President of Albania, President Topi has
followed a daily routine: Leaving home at 08:45 with an escort without
sirens and without blocking the roads, towards the Presidency. But how
will be the last day of Bamir Topi as president?
Top Channel has followed closely the last hours of the fifth President after the fall of communism. Although it is the last day, everything goes as usual, as a normal working day.
The President in duty started working with a quick consult about the daily activities.
Everything is ready for the award ceremony of publicist Ardian Klosi, post mortem, together with the decoration of diplomat Shaban Murati, which will continue in a special ceremony, the decoration of the well-known Albanian figures during the year, which have left marks in Topi’s favorite football team.
“Tirana” football team was honored with the “Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu” award. The President declared that that team has not only a great history, but is also the symbol of the Albanian dissidence.
The technical staff is ready to record a message that the President wants to transmit to the Albanain citizens. Together with Mimoza Kociu, the Spokesperson of the President, they keep consulting each other about the last interview of the President.
Meanwhile, the President is at his office, in front of a mountain of paperwork waiting for his signature.
TCH: What feelings does Bamir Topi have in the last day of his mandate as President of Albania?
Bamir Topi: Every day of the President is a busy day. I can say you that this day us also very busy. I consider it a normal day of a state employee, because every position has a start and an ending. This must be seen as part of the normality, and to tell you the truth, I don’t have any special feeling.
TCH: Although it is up to the others to evaluate your job, I would like to know with what balance did you close your task as Head of the State?
Bamir Topi: That’s right, it is up to the others to assess that. It is up to the reasonable politicians, because in my Presidential path I have met reasonable and unreasonable politicians, same as in life. I have met people who have a very civil communication, and others who have a non-civil physiognomy. I see this five year term with a very positive balance that doesn’t go as a merit to a single name, but to the entire Albanian state. Hence, I feel proud about it.
TCH: Everyone knows that the Presidency is not the last station in your political career. Which are your future plans?
Bamir Topi: I have frequently said that I will continue my life in politics, and I have also made a public promise. Until the last second that I will be in my post as President, I will release no political declaration about any party.
TCH: Do you regret that the state protocol doesn’t provide a good-bye speech, same as it happened with your predecessor, Alfred Moisiu?
Bamir Topi: I don’t have complexes. These are things that are up to other people, and the state protocol is decided by the Council of Minister. They have decided so, and I will respect it, because I respect the office of the Head of the State. I have always respected that office, before coming here. I have respected it also during my five year term, and I will always respect it.
TCH: Mr. President, thank you for your time in this last day as president of the Albanian republic in a very busy day for you and your staff.
Bamir Topi: It was a pleasure for me having you here in the last day and transmit through your prestigious channel the emotions of the last presidential day. There is a last day for everything, and a first day for another.
While the president answered to our questions, his political staff gathered in the presidential room, waiting for the farewell meeting which the president started with a thank you. He said that altogether they were able to close a successful five year term, underlining that his work would be useless without their help in fulfilling the constitutional laws.
Topi was elected in 2007 and after five years he was handing over his post to Bujar Nishan,
Meanwhile, another challenge awaits President Topi. the return in the political life and the effort to be the challenger of the Party that elected him and to Prime Minister Berisha.
