Ballaban farmers, known since medieval times, are abandoning villages

The areas of Ballaban and Suka were known since medieval times for
agricultural fairs. Today the area has half of the population they had
in 1990.

The residents of Ballaban, one of the most remote areas of the Kelcyra Municipality, live mainly on their agricultural productions.

The wholesale agricultural market in Ballaban, where farmers gather once a week, is getting smaller each day, because the population of the area is shrinking.

There are 14 villages, with not more than 1500 residents of total, with 12.000 heads of smaller livestock, and four dairy processing shops.

“Infrastructure remains a problem. Some villages don’t have roads. Villages with roads have their residents coming back even from cities or from emigration, building new homes”, said Dashnor Memishahi, head of the administrative unit in Ballaban.
