Background of protests in Skopje

The protests that started as a revolt against the Court’s verdict for
the “Monster” trial, is bringing to surface many other unresolved issues
of the Albanians in Macedonia, say political experts in Skopje.

They say that protesters, discontented by the political representatives, have chosen the street to articulate their protests. Legal expert Osman Kadriu thinks that the state must understand right the order of these protests and show its readiness to cooperate for the rights of Albanians in Macedonia.

“These protests bring to light the fact that many issues have not been regulated correctly through the Constitution, while others are not regulated at all by the Constitution. We have a special list of issues that are related to the legal and constitutional status of the Albanians in Macedonia. The Constitution needs to change, starting from the Constitution’s preambula, which has not been harmonized with the Ochrid Agreement. We should take this status once and for all, because we are lawmakers in Macedonia”, declared Osman Kadriu, legal expert.

Analyst Afrim Gashi values that the Albanian people who are protesting don’t feel represented in the Skopje government. According to him, the protesters must tell the Macedonian politicians that their will cannot be manipulated.

“It is important to send the message to the state and our representatives that the Albanians in Macedonia are represented politically and if someone think he can resolve the national issue by taking a post with a fake agenda, than these protests show the opposite. No one can play with the fate of the Albanian people. The advise to the Macedonian government leaders is that they should not think that they can control the Albanian people if they can control their political parties”, declared Afrim Gashi, analyst.

Albanian intellectuals say that the protests are a democratic right of anyone, however, they appeal to hold them quietly and without violence. Protests will continue this Wednesday in Kumanova, and this Friday in Skopje.
