Azerbaijan supports TAP

After Albania, Greece and Italy signed a mutual agreement to support the
Trans Atlantic Pipeline project, the Azeri government has supported
this project for the first time in public.

The Deputy Minister of Energy in Azerbaijan, Gulmamad Javadov, declared for the prestigious “Business Week” that TAP is the favoured project of Azerbaijan, as the best way to transport gas to Europe.

TAP has only one rival, Nabucco, and the Azeri government will take the final decision for the winning project.

“Azerbaijan hopes that the final offer of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline that will be given by the end of March will be strong and competitive so that we can chose it as the southern gas corridor in Europe”, Javadov declared from Athens.

The 800 km long project is owned by three energy giants, the Norwegian Statoil, the Swiss Egl and the German Eon Rurgas. “Tap has always been technically better and more feasible. The agreement gives strong political foundations to the project, as a good chance to be part of the southern gas corridor”, Javadov declared.

The final decision will be taken this June by the three companies that develop the Shah Deniz 2 area, British Petroleum, Statoil and the Azeri state company “Sokar”. Statoil is directly involved in the TAP project, being the main shareholder with 42.5% of the shares. At this point, the Azeri government seems to be orienting the third shareholder “Sokar” to choose TAP. The realization of TAP brings direct profits to the Albanian economy and increases the geo-strategic role of the country.
