Automobile tax negotiations continue

More than one month has passed from the creation of the Finance Ministry group that will discuss about finding the  right formula for the tax of automobiles sold within the Albanian domestic market.

Ministry sources notified “Shqip” newspaper that the group contains
representatives from the Customs, Tax Office and Directory of
Transport Service.

These three institutions, together with the Ministry of Finances, will
discuss and negotiate any possibility of changing the tax on automobiles. The strongest
debate is focused between the Directory of Transport Service and the
Customs.

The Customs is against the tax removal for imported cars, while the
Directory of Transport Service proposes a tax coefficient based on the
vehicle age, which will be paid at the Vehicle Licensing Agency.

Negotiations become even harder with the EU directives in the middle.

During the August-December 2010 period, only 2882 cars have been sold within the domestic market, almost 81.5% less than the period
January-July. The new tax enters the scene exactly in August, causing a
stagnation of the automobile market.

According to the statistics, in five months, the domestic market has
sold only 1146 used vehicles, 2882 in total with the new ones. While during the first half of the year, 15,652 vehicles were sold in total.
