The Austrian President, Heinz Fischer, was received this Tuesday at the
Albanian Presidency by his Albanian counterpart, Bujar Nishani. After a
meeting behind closed doors, the presidents held a joint press
conference.

Mr.Fischer reconfirmed the support of Austria for Albania’s candidate status.

“You must be sure that Austria will support the European Union candidate status for Albania. If we recapitulate the talks and debates that were held in December 2013, I think that we are on the right track. Albania is playing a role of stability in the region, and this is very good, because Albania is keeping a moderated role in the decision-making procedure and the negotiations. The same think will do the other countries of the region in this integration path”, Fischer declared.

By emphasizing that Albania needs the European standards as reference, Nishani declared that the status is the main objective not only of politics, but also of the entire Albanian society.

“There is no other alternative for Albania besides the European Union integration. This is a process with many challenges, and the main responsibility falls on Albania and the Albanian people. The support in this process is unchangeable”, Nishani declared.

The President gave a short answer when he was asked about the decision of the Commission of laws to reject his decree for the High Inspectorate of Declaration and Audit of Assets.

“Same as the institution of the President and the Parliament, any other institution has the right to act upon its constitutional competences. The stance of the Parliament is that of a sovereign institution and every conflict of institutions will be resolved based on the predictions of the Constitution”, Nishani underlined.
