The hunger strikers were visited by the US Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu.

After expressing the condolences for the act of Gjergj Ndreca, the US main diplomat in Tirana declared that he asked the Albanian government to build communication bridges with the strikers and appealed them to stay away from extreme acts, since they are not the right solution.

“I know that you are protesting and you would want your voice to be heard. But self sacrification is not the right path for resolving this issue. I and the US government would not like to intervene, but I asked the Albanian government to find a way to build communication bridges with you. It is your right to get heard, and this is what I asked the government for”, the US Ambassador declared.

Strikers: Determined until sacrifice

Besides the lack of food and its symptoms, the strikers are shocked by the extreme action taken by their fellow striker, Gjergj Ndreca.

In the early hours after the tragic act, the former political prisoners declared that they are determined to go until the end.

When asked if they are rushing with the extreme protest, keeping in mind that the government has promised again to continue distributing the money for this category, the former political prisoners answered by saying that they cannot wait anymore, after 22 years of lies.

Oketa: Communication must start

The Parliament Member and one of the New Democratic Spirit leaders, Gazmend Oketa, was invited on Top Channel on a live interview about the strike of the political persecuted people.

After wishing a fast recovery to Gjergj Ndreca, Oketa declared that his extreme action was due to the lack of communication. He said that the government should build communication bridges with this part of the society, especially with the strikers, since the government’s duty is to defend the life of their citizens.

“The Prime Minister’s silence obliged Ndreca to sacrifice himself. I drafted today an open letter for the Parliamentary parties, in order to have an extraordinary session in Parliament for starting the dialogue with the strikers. Today we are on the 17th day of the strike and the government has not made any effort to communicate. The life of these strikers must be preserved. They are decided to sacrifice themselves. The main objective of the government is to defend the citizens’ lives, and their request are clearly economic”, Oketa declared.

SP and SMI react

The Socialist Party reacted by accusing Prime Minister Berisha of ignoring the former political prisoners who are demanding their rights, by bringing the situation to the scenes that shocked the entire opinion.

“’I used to trust Berisha as Christ himself”. This is what Ndreca used to say, but Berisha chose to do what he does best. To ignore him, call him a charlatan in his media. These people are suffering because they dared to challenge that regime and they are being ignored today”, declared the SP representative, Lindita Nikolli.

SMI asked the government to create a dialogue with the strikers and find a humanitarian solution. “We must find a way of transparent dialogue for all the problematic that made the strikers to chose extreme measures such as the hunger strike”, declared the SMI General Secretary, Luan Rama.
