Arvizu: No border changes

During the 15th Conference of the Security Council in Western Balkan,
the US Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, spoke about the
nationalist tones of the Albanian politics.

After praising Albania’s tradition for good relations with the neighbours in the last 100 years, in a population that today is free in the entire region, Arvizu declared that nationalist rhetoric could drive the country into a dangerous game.

“Several Albanian politicians were seen lately using negative messages focused on ethnicity, only for their political interest. This is a dangerous game, because if the ethnic tensions would come alive again, it would be difficult to control or predict them. It’s indispensable for the people in power to refrain from firing ethnic feelings within and outside Albania”, Arvizu declared.

“Seeing the positive role of the Albanian government in keeping the good relations with the neighbours, we encourage its leaders to be clear with this element. The elections should not be a justification to give mixed messages”, he added.

“As consequence of these declarations, two neighbour countries cancelled their participation in the 100th anniversary of independence. This might seem a small consequence, but this would block the good relations with the neighbours, which makes the solution of the suspended problems even more difficult”, Arvizu declared.

The US Ambassador was even more direct in the reference to the Red and Black Alliance, considering their initiative for national unification as against the EU integration.

“Allow me to be clear as crystal. The US does not support the change of national borders in Balkans. Every effort to make this is counter-productive and destabilizing”, Arvizu declared.

Germany was on the same line with the US.

Rama: US declarations, an alarm bell

The opposition leader, Edi Rama, commented on Twitter that the declarations of the US Ambassador should be considered as an alarm bell.

“The US Ambassador’ message about nationalist deliriums are an alarm bell. National unification doesn’t come from the old ways of destructive anger”, Rama declared.

Rama added that the ghosts of the past nationalism have no more space in our region. The unification should come with the EU path. Rama thanked the US for what has done so far for Albania, saying that the Albanians are free today thanks to the US support and the EU understanding, things that can never be damaged”, decalred the Albanian opposition leader.
