During a visit in the city of Fier, the US Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, discussed the conflict about the District Council.
He attended meetings with the Fier local leaders, and declared that the District Council is blocked while the elections are approaching. He promised to discuss the matter with the authorities in Tirana.
The Fier District issue has turned into a main stalemate for the Albanian politics. The opposition has used it as a condition by refusing to pass any qualified majority law in Parliament without solving this issue first.
“We decided to come in Fier today. The big question that has taken the attention of everyone is the District Council’s inability to function properly. It is regrettable that those who were elected by the citizens are unable to do their work, and it affects the way how you approach the general elections. I feel that we have better information now and we can be able to have wider discussions in Tirana”, Arvizu declared.
The second matter that Ambassador Arvizu discussed was about the European Commission expectancies for Albania’s progress-report.
“One day before the publishing of the progress-report regarding the EU Status for Albania, Ambassador Sequi is the one who can discuss it in a more specific way. But there is a basic issue that I would like to underline. I have read all declarations coming from Brussels and noted that they are talking about a given mass of work regarding the specific recommendations. I think that this refers to special individuals and special legislation matters, such as the Parliamentary Reform, the immunity lifting and the law for the Supreme Court. All these are very important”.
The US Ambassador added: “What we mean with a ‘great mass of work’, is the political will to undertake decisions that can allow courts to operate independently from political influences, so that their decisions can be open, objective and represent the interests of all citizens”.
