The United States Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, received the
Citizen of Honour title in the city of Elbasan, as proposed by Mayor
Qazim Sejdini, and as approved by the Municipal Council, with the
motivation “for contributing with the development of the Elbasan city
community and for building cooperation bridges between the two people”.
Besides the gratitude and emotions for this title, the United States Ambassador also mentioned some final words for the Albanian people, before leaving our country. Based on the initiative that the United States Embassy launched in Albania “Act Now”, Arvizu appealed the Albanian citizens to make their government leaders accountable.
“The role of the civil society and of the common citizens is important in the health of every democracy, and in a democracy that is facing a fast development, like that of Albania, the civil involvement is absolutely vital. Albania is undeniably progressing, but the continuing of the government reforms is essential. There is a vital need for improving the financial situation of the local governments, and part of this responsibility falls on the central government, especially in improving the way how the revenues are collected and how they are distributed. On the same time it is important for the local government to improve its efficiency, to reduce losses and clientelism, and to focus on serving the citizens”, Arvizu underlined.
During the ceremony, the United States Ambassador was also greeted on behalf of the Albanian government by the Deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi, who valued his contribution in Albania. Present in this event were also Parliament Members from the Socialist Party, the Democratic Party and the Socialist Movement for Integration, and also Ministers Haxhinasto and Gjiknuri, together with other local leaders.
