The United States of America appreciated Albania’s positive role
regarding the religious tolerance and the defense of Jewish people
during World War II.
This fact was mentioned by the US Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, and two representatives of the US State Department Secretary, Hilary Clinton – Mrs. Hannah Rosenthal and Mrs. Farah Pandith – during their visit at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports in Tirana.
Minister Bumci underlined that Albania has participated in the 2011 initiative for fighting hate and for encouraging religious tolerance, and also for giving its contribution to this initiative.
When asked about the construction a memorial or museum for the memory of the Holocaust victims, and for valuing the role of the people that defended the Jewish during the World War II in Albania, Mr. Bumci declared that this is a good initiative that could become real in the future.
Mrs. Rosenthal noted that she came from a family that had suffered the Holocaust consequences and had survived. She declared that Albania was among the only countries in the world that defended the Jewish people during the World War II, a fact that she noted in all countries that she visited as a diplomat. According to Mrs. Rosenthal, our country deserves a special respect and gratitude for this.
