Appeal for dental hygiene

Doctors of the Regional Health Authority appeal for more care with children’s teeth.

A study made in schools shows that students aged 12 have two bad teeth in average, due to a poor hygiene, while the caries level is high.

“Brushing teeth twice a day after food and usage of clean water loses the acidity and affects the health in general”, declared Vojsava Sulce, from the Regional Health Authority.

Oral hygiene and tooth care is low, and also the changing of toothbrushes once in three months, but doctors appeal parents to take care of their children’s food, especially for those who tend to eat more processed food, such as potato chips or others that damage the teeth.

“Malnutrition has two sides. It fails to give nutritive substances for the organism in general, and certainly for the teeth. Excessive use of sweets and potato chips, or other conserved foods, increase chances for damaging the teeth. When teeth are neglected and not treated, they go to the point of removing them”, Sulce says.

The dentist service is still offered in schools, but in most of the cases their role is to just raise awareness, since not all schools have labs.

According to recent studies, Albanians are still considered as a people with a low health education and care. Although a check at the dentist is advised every six months, people go only when they have toothache. Going to the dentist might be considered a luxury in rural areas, although mouth infection may cause several other diseases.
