Heroine and cocaine issues and their international traffic through the
“Balkan Corridor” have brought in Albania the Director of the Federal
Service for Narcotics Traffic Control in Russia, Victor Ivanov.

The Russian high-rank police officer has signed a cooperation agreement with the Albanian Interior Minister, Bujar Nishani, for fighting drug traffic in Albania and for exchanging information between both countries, a cooperation that could also bring the arrest of any big criminal group.

Mr.Ivanov was very direct in the explanation that he gave for the media about what is happening with the drug traffic, especially for the road from Afghanistan to the Western countries.

“We must admit that Albania is one of the first countries that feels the consequences of this traffic, because the known corridor along Turkey, Bulgaria, Macedonia and other Mediterranean countries, makes Albania one of the first countries that encounters this traffic. Therefore, Russia has interest to protect its own citizens by taking respective information from Albania. On the other hand, our interest is also to secure precise information to Albania, based on the perception that this is a common threat. I want to say that the cocaine and heroin infrastructure has some details that I want to underline. The criminal groups that have secured the heroin traffic from Afghanistan have contributed for bringing bigger quantities from Latin American countries”, Ivanov declared.

Ivanov answered to the journalists why Kosovo had been left out the regional antinarcotics unit, a unit that includes Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia, but not Kosovo, when this country is mentioned as one of the transit lines for heroin.

“The stance of the Russian Federation for Kosovo is already known, and it is not my competence to answer to this question. But we are satisfied with Albania’s work in the territory of Kosovo, an area that is not recognized by the Russian Federation, and which has to do with the phenomenon that is part of our discussion today.”

Minister Nishani mentioned the involvement of Albania in 31 international operations against drug traffic in the recent three years.
