As of today, the former prime minister of the opposition DP Sali Berisha is forced to remain under house arrest.

The Anticorruption Court ordered the former prime minister not to leave the apartment located on “Mustafa Matohiti” street in Tirana, and not to communicate with any person other than those who live with him.

“What is worrying is the fact that this decision prohibits communication for a member of the Albanian Parliament, whose functional duty is freedom of expression, and this was given without obtaining a special authorization from the Assembly,” said his lawyer Gjokutaj.

But for house arrest measures, the law does not make a difference if you are a politician or an ordinary citizen, the only ones with whom MP Sali Berisha will communicate are only the family members who live with him.

The court declares that the house arrest supervision will be carried out by the two prosecutors of the corruption case with the “Partizani” properties, and the judicial police services, which will visit the former prime minister’s apartment every day to verify whether he is there or not.

After the announcement of the verdict, judge Irena Gjoka gave Sali Berisha five days of legal time to appeal.
