Mark Hauptmann, MP at the German Parliament, has reacted after the declaration published by the MPs of the CDU and CSU coalition, who said that the possibility for postponing the elections in Albania should be taken in consideration as a way for resolving the crisis.

Johann David Wadephul, vice leader of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group at the German Parliament, and also leader of the Work-Group for Western Balkan; and Christian Schmidt, from the CSU, rapporteur for Albania at the German Parliamentary Commission of Foreign Affairs, have stated that the political parties should sit and engage in dialogue for resolving the crisis.

In their declaration, obtained by Top Channel, they mentioned the possibility of postponing the date of local elections in Albania.

But for Mark Hauptmann, this request can be considered de facto as a request for changing the Constitution, which would put in question the sovereignty of the country.

He goes even further by underlining that “it is unusual to interfere with the internal matters of Albania. As a Parliamentary Group, we don’t have the right to request a postponement of elections in an independent country.

Hauptmann: Democratic stability in Albania includes respecting international law

In a joint statement, the two MPs, Johann David Wadephul, deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Parliament and head of the Western Balkans working group, and Christian Schmidt, CSU, rapporteur for Albania in the Foreign Affairs Commission, recently expressed their concern about the situation in Albania in an exclusive interview for Deutsche Welle. Their statement included the idea of postponing the date of local elections in Albania. Mark Hauptmann, MP for South Thuringia in the German Parliament, comments:

“It is true that we are watching the domestic crisis in Albania with great concern. Regarding the European future of Albania, there is indeed a need for dialogue between the government and the opposition, and both sides must approach each other and be ready to compromise for democratic stability.

However, I look critically at the idea of interfering in internal affairs of Albania. As a parliamentary group, we are not entitled to call for a postponement of elections in an independent state. De facto, it would mean demanding to change the constitution of Albania and its electoral legislation. This would consequently touch questions of a foreign state’s sovereignty. Democratic stability also includes respecting the rules of international law.”
