The Macedonian leaders keep ignoring the appeals from the EU and USA. If
the current politicians will keep blocking the creation of a new
government, they risk meeting a different behavior from Brussels and
Washington.
The idea of new sanctions was mentioned also by the President of the European Commission, Donald Tusk, before his unsuccessful meeting with the President of Macedonia, Gjorgje Ivanov.
Experts say that chances for sanctions are real, but when could they happen?
Gjorgji Spasov, Political Science professor and also an experienced diplomat, said that after the EU and USA have exhausted every option to push Ivanov and Gruevski for resolving the crisis, they may not be allowed to travel to America, their asset may freeze and they may not receive political assistance.
Both President of Macedonia and VMRO-DPMNE leader risk facing international investigations for abusing with EU funds. Spasov says there may even be verifications for the involvement of international crime.
Gruevski, whose party has been in power since 2006, may face pressure from the EPP. He may be forced to resign or his party may be removed from EPP.
The former Macedonian Ambassador to Austri, Georgi Filipov, Tusk’s declarationa fter his visit in Skopje must be seen as a serious warning against Ivanov, because they show that the block will not express its discontent with just words.
