Will there be a border exchange between Serbia and Kosovo? This is the debate that has raised tension, while the presidents of Kosovo and Serbia, Thaci and Vucic, appealed citizens to not respond to provocations.
Thaci insists that the border correction is a unique chance for both Kosovo and Serbia to resolve their issues in a peaceful way. This means that the Albanian communes in southern Serbia would join Kosovo. “But Kosovo has no territory to give to Serbia”, Thaci said. Haradinaj sees these declarations as a counter-response to Serbia.
However, political analysts consider this debate as very strange.
Blerim Burjani, an analyst from the Deutsche Welle, said that such debates would be very dangerous for the region, which has a long history of ethnic problems.
Johanna Deimel, Balkan expert at the Southeastern Association for European Studies, says that the territory exchange is a dangerous and unnecessary escalation. “If Washington really discusses behind closed doors about exchanging territories in Balkan, then Brussels has lost control”, she said for Deutsche Welle.
Daniel Serwer, from the International School of Washington for Advances Studies, said that the border correction is a bad idea that should never happen.
However, Kosovo and Serbia have been engaged in a dialogue since 2011. They have reached a series of agreements, but the EU wants a final agreement which would improve the relations between both countries.
In the last meeting that was held in Brussels, both presidents, Thaci and Vucic, they agreed to intensify their cooperation in the future.
