The High Political Councilor of the American Commission of Helsinki,
Robert Hand, warned that the political class in Albania should not be
complacent, but it should cooperate for the country’s interest.
In an interview for the VOA journalist, Kedia Kostreci, he said that Albania needs a real consolidation of democratic institutions.
Robert Hand: I think that the developments have been positive. The passing was very regular. This was an important step for Albania. However, we must understand that this was just one step, in the general view. A regular transition should be the normal path for a democratic government. I hope that this is sufficient. Tghey should take steps ahead to face other challenges and be ready for European Union integration.
When asked about the tensions between the two parties, Hand thinks that for as long that there is participation and commitment, disagreements are allowed.
Robert Hand: “But there must be commitment and efforts to reach compromises, for the country’s interest. The opposition has an important role in democracy. It is not only about the government, but about the entire political system.
Robert Hand said that Europe should play its part too.
Robert Hand: We have seen Balkan countries taking positive steps in the past, and those steps are not valued. This creates a cynical feeling in these country, a feeling that they are not being treated rightfully or that ar enot being taken seriously. I am concerned that the feeling of fatigue with enlargement, or blaming enlargement for the problems that have taken place so far, the countries that are adhering might not receive the answer they deserve. This would be a mistake”.
The high-rank oplitical adviser at the American Commission of Helsinki declared that he’s hopeful that the commitment promised to Balkan in the European Union will be more evident this year. It will be shown that when countries take the necessary steps, this should be rewarded.
