The United States Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, declared that the
Albanian judiciary remains a weak chain link that does not punish the
human traffic.
Arvizu declared that the government might make its efforts, although it will be difficult with a weak judiciary.
“Some of the most important aspects of the fight against human traffic are deep investigations and successful prosecution that concludes with significant sentences.
Unfortunately, there were only two convictions for human traffic in 2013. The frequent arrests made by the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 is very important. It is vital for this to turn into a higher number of convictions.
The best way for this to happen is for the government to do its job, and also for Prosecutors and judges to do more efforts in order to reach progress.
The government may do all efforts to reach progress, but in Albania, without the judiciary, which is a weak chain, these things cannot be achieved”, Arvizu declared.
In the workshop organized by the United States Embassy, in presence of Prosecutors from the United States of America, the Deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi valued their assistance and declared that the convictions given by the judiciary are not justifiable. He added that the government would do maximal efforts for reforming the judiciary.
“Your presence in this activity shows what we all know, that crime and traffic knows no borders, and the cooperation between our countries is a necessity if we want to win the fight against criminal activities”, Peleshi declared.
