Albania’s challenge for 2018

2017 brought Albania a historic agreement, or at least it has been interpreted as such: the judiciary reform.

All politicians since 1991 will be vetted, but what are the expectancies for 2018?

Deutsche Welle starts its report with the judiciary. After the establishing of the Vetting Law, High Council of Prosecution, High Council of Judiciary, the judiciary reform will enter a path of no return.

The Special Prosecution Against Corruption (SPAC) has competences to investigate and punish active and passive corruption of highest levels, without sparing government leaders, MPs, party leaders and high-level officials, starting from 1991.

When this happens, it will be the revolution much awaited by common Albanians and progressive political forces, detaching Albania from the long post-communist transition.

As for the economy, the indicators for the upcoming year are positive, with a growth of 4%. However, the lack of security with property titles will remain a major obstacle for developing the economy.

2018 will start with the protests of the opposition against the Rama 2 government. This is the year when Albania expects the EU Council of Ministers to reopen the accession negotiations for the first six months of the year.

The judiciary reform results and decriminalization of politics are determining for a positive decision, which, if takes place, will make 2018 part of the EU and Albania history.
