Albanians in Macedonia feel unsafe

The violent protests that took place in the Gjorce Petrov neighborhood
of Skopje have increased the insecurity feeling among the Albanian
residents.

After the turmoil that were followed by burning of properties of Albanians and appeals for killing them, some families have left their homes temporarily.

“I removed my family from there and we are currently staying at the Nerez neighborhood, close to the Gjorce Petrovit. No one is protecting us. We are the first place where the Macedonians pour out their anger. Whatever happens between Albanians and Macedonians, for every robbery or anything else, our properties are the first ones to get damaged”, a resident declared.

The Albanians in Nerez also feel unsafe, a neighborhood close to the turmoil. Their houses have been attacked by Macedonian hooligans several times. They say that they couldn’t sleep in the past nights.

“There is no one to protect us and we had to stay awake all night to guard. We are forced to get organized by ourselves for our protection”, says one of the residents.

The tense atmosphere was felt even in the neighboring commune of Saraj, where Macedonian protesters tried to break the police cordon. The Head of the Saraj commune, Bekim Murati, declared that the situation is under control.

“The Saraj residents should not fall prey to provocations and disinformation, because all institutions have taken all necessary steps for them to feel safe in their homes. We are working to guarantee free movement, so that their properties will not be damage”, Murati declared.
