The university teachers’ union has announced national protests from tomorrow, February 22nd, to show that they remain determined to achieve the fulfillment of their demands related to increased wages and improved academic work conditions.
“If they are left without a salary and without an academic career, a lecturer no longer stays in Albania, that’s why the best lecturers are leaving, the professionals are leaving, not the party militants or ‘patronageists’, they are not leaving, the real specialists are leaving. But there is a problem, every Albanian parent brings their child to the university to receive civic education and a profession, but if the professionals leave, who will give them the profession?”, said Lush Susaj, lecturer at the Agricultural University of Tirana.
This time, the students were also called to the protest, to raise their voices for their concerns, such as the issue of study fees.
“The heart and foundation of the university are the students. Why should Albanian students pay a bachelor’s fee, when Kosovo and the region have it zero? Why should an Albanian student pay 2000 euros for a master’s degree when Kosovo pays only 300-400 euros. Why shouldn’t the Albanian student have the notebook for free, pay rent and transport. They pay everywhere and are the poorest people in the region and Europe”, Susaj said further on.
