Albanian universities lose dozens of places in the Southern European universities ranking

On the eve of the start of the new academic year, the ranking of the universities of Southern Europe has been published by the World University Ranking analysts.

Although there are over 40 institutions of higher education in our country, only 4 universities are included in the list, which are the University of Tirana, the University of Durrës, the Polytechnic University and the Agricultural University of Tirana.

The University of Tirana is now ranked 677th, 10 places away from the bottom.

“For a few years the World University Ranking has included four Albanian public universities (UT, UAMD, UPT, UBT) in the ranking. It turns out that 4 Albanian Universities fall around 200 places from last year’s ranking. In our Universities, seems that friendship has prevailed over meritocracy, interests over integrity and politics over science. Meanwhile, the best universities in the Region are 3 Serbian universities, 2 Universities of Bosnia, and 1 of Northern Macedonia,” says Migen Qiraxhiu, of the Civic Center group.

“This is an unprecedented failure for Tirana when we consider that in 2021 these universities were ranked in the 301-350 band and in 2022 between the 350-400 places. Our group assesses that this positioning of Albanian universities is related to their approach to education, as they seem to invest more in the offices’ furniture of the holders than in scientific equipment, recruit staff based on friendship and not meritocracy, pay guards more than scientific projects, and in the last two years there have been substantial problems with the academic, political and legal reputation of the incumbents”, added Qiraxhiu.
