Albanian religious communities oppose gay marriage

On the International Day against Homophobia, the Pink Embassy in Albania said that they will ask the Albanian government to recognize gay marriage in our country. But leaders of religious communities are against.

“Human society and family will be deformed if we build such a structure that is not founded anywhere. Such a society would be founded on adoption. Albania already has an ageing population”, says Ylli Gurra from the Muslim community, who asks officials to not ignore their voice on this matter.

Orthodox Christians are on the same line.

“If families don’t have a natural combination, a father and a mother as parents, the growth of their children will be deformed, and the entire society will be deformed in consequence. They can do whatever they want in their private lives, but if we keep up with their appetite, then we could end up with groups who will require other statuses, maybe statuses of animals. These interest groups have an ideology and funds, a system, and unfortunately people in power who are trying to make it legal”, says Miron Cako.

But beyond religion, how does gay marriage affect the society’s psychology? Psychologist Bruna Laboviti: “As long as it is a change, it will influence the psychological and moral aspect of a family, because that would make us expect parents of the same gender who would want to adopt children as well, after they get married”.

The Pink Embassy is determined to ask the government to legalize same-sex marriage, a right that, according to them, the Albanian government must recognize the same way their European citizens did.
