The Albanian prisoner, Ilia (Ylli) Kareli who was found dead this
Thursday midnight in his isolation cell, passed away due to internal injuries caused by use of violence.

The coroner declared that he had several broken ribs in his chest and signs of trauma on his body.

These injuries might have been caused by rubber batons three days ago, a few hours after he killed a prison guard.

“Beaten to death”, was the typical title used by several Greek media who reported this case.

His body will be returned at the Nigrite prison, in Serres, while the Prosecution has opened an investigation.

The Greek Ministry of Justice has published on Friday that “the defendant for the murder of the prison guard was transferred at the Nigrita prison and placed in an isolation cell for security reasons. The prisoner had injuries on his body, for which he gave no explanation and refused to get a visit from a doctor”.

At 23:30, after seeing that he was not well, the guard entered the cell and called the emergency who arrived only to confirm his death.

The Prison Guard Union in Greece expressed their regret for this event, and declared that no wrong ideas should be created without the coroner’s report.

Information show that the situation in prisons is very tense, especially in Malandrino, Trikala, Patra and Dhomosko, where Albanian prisoners have rejected food. Police sources say that the measures inside and outside prisons are drastic.

The first institution that has reacted in Tirana was that of the Ombudsman, who asked the Foreign Ministry to follow the truth of this story.
