The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, met with the president of the
Puglia region in Italy, Michele Emilio, who offered maximal cooperation
in tourism, trade, transportation and water.

After a visit in Fiera del Levante, Rama and local authorities inaugurated the “Albania” road, and the Prime Minister attended a press conference with the most prestigious newspapers in Italy. When asked about the immigration of Albanians in the early ’90s, Rama said it now belongs to the past.

“The apocalyptical image of 25 years ago that circulated the world media, with the Albanians flocking a ship in the coasts of Puglia, seems like it belongs to another  geological era. Those who arrived created concern and fear, but they have integrated and are contributing with the Italian GDP with 3.2 billion EUR of taxes, based on the 2014 data. I think that the Albanian citizens have integrated and emigration has entered the history books that show that emigration has always served to increase the economy of the host and country of origin”, Rama declared.

Rama added that things have changed, and there are 20.000 Italians working in Albania. Rama added that although there are many Italian enterprises in Albania, more should be done for cooperation between Albania and the Puglia region.
