Albanian Muslims who celebrate Orthodox Easter

Rolanda and Pandeli Suli, from Elbasan, have celebrated Christmas, Bayram and even Nevruz for the past 45 years that they have been living together.

Rolanda was raised in a Muslim family, and today, married to an Orthodox husband, she paints boiled eggs and goes to church regularly.

Pandeli says that they also celebrated Muslim holidays, like Bayram, in respect of his wife’s family.

They say they celebrated their religious holidays even during the communist era, when every religious practice was banned by law.

“It was banned by law, but you cannot remove a tradition that has been going on for millennia”, Pandeli says.
