Albanian MEFA on maritime border agreement with Greece

The Albanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs reacted this afternoon regarding the maritime border talks with Greece.

The Ministry says that the delimiting of the maritime territory is on the interest of both countries, as regards sovereignty and economic exploitation.

“The Constitutional Court rejected the agreement signed between both countries in 2009. Since 2013, both countries have conducted a series of discussions for finding a stable solution to this matter”, the Foreign Ministry states.

The declaration underlines that the stance of the Albanian government remains firm about signing an agreement based on the principles of the Maritime Rights Conventions, (both countries are part of); based on the international practice; on the Constitutional Court verdict and on the internal legislation which will enable an acceptable division for both parties.

“This firm stance is the basis that will be followed by experts who will negotiate for Albania on this matter. Any other interpretation is malicious, aiming to deny ugly mistakes of the past”, the Foreign Ministry declared.
