Taulant Toma, the Albanian citizen who became notorious after escaping
from a high security prison in Parma (Italy) this year, was finally
caught in Belgium and soon will be returned to Italy, where he will now
be charged even for escaping prison, besides the convictions for
kidnapping and drug traffic. And this escape wasn’t his first.
On October 9, 2009, he escaped from the prison of Terni. He was caught on December of the same year, and for this reason he was transferred to a high security prison in Parma.
But even from there, the 29-year-old was able to escape with another Albanian, Valentin Frrokaj. Their escape was the most classical, by sawing off the cell window bars and by using sheets to climb down.
They were able to leave the prison by exploiting the hour of family visits. Frrokaj was caught in Milano, in August, while Toma was caught through a cooperation with other European police agencies.
Their first escape attracted a lot of attention and raised questions about the prison safety in general, and especially in Parma, where there are very important mafia bosses serving time.
According to the prison police, this episode showed once again the poor attention paid to the prison safety recently.
Italy is shorthand of 7500 prison guardians, and the number is expected to increase with 2000 in the next two years.
