Farmers in Përmet and Këlcyra protested today over what they called the most serious crisis in recent years within the sector.
The protesters talk about a 30% increase in the price of agricultural inputs since last year and about the 2-3 fold increase of these prices over the last 5 years.
They warned of incessant protests over the criteria for state subsidies. According to them, the increase of the threshold for the cultivated area, and for the number of farm animals, disqualifies about 60-70% of applicants.
Also, farmers demand that the scheme include subsidies for milk at 10 ALL per liter.
Farmers have also been supported in this protest by the Consumer and Producers Protection Association.
Gjirokastra region is the main livestock region in the country with about 400 thousand small farm animals, 20 thousand cattle and over 21 thousand beehives.
Gjirokastra also has about 700 ha planted with vineyards and 2000 ha cultivated with fruit and olive trees.
