A terrible crime took place today in the Malandrino prison, Central
Greece, where an Albanian prisoner has killed a prison guard after
learning his permit to see his sick mother had been refused.
After threatening the guards with their lives, he has been able to attack one of them with a self-made knife. The guardian was immediately sent ot the Amfisa hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life. The guard was a 45-year-old father of two, with 14 years of experience.
This crime took place in a moment when extraordinary measures have been taken throughout the country, after information that protests are being prepared against the government draft-law for building high-security prisons.
Prisoners fear they will lose many rights once transferred in these high security prisons, especially the right to visit their relatives.
The Greek government believes that these buildings will start reforms in the prison system, which have been criticized for overpopulation and poor conditions.
