Representatives of the Albanian government have taken the heart and some
skin issues of the Albanian prisoner who died of tortures in a Greek
prison after he had killed a guard.
Three Albanian experts examined the organs and took a copy of the autopsy from the Greek Coroner’s Office in Athens.
The experts discussed about his cause of death, but this conversation was not made public. Sources at the Coroner’s Office say that it is still unknown if the removal of the heart for the autopsy was done for a reason or if it was a mistake.
Experts say that the heart needs a DNA test in order to remove doubts that it might belong to someone else. If this would be verified, that would be an unprecedented move against justice.
There are chances that the heart might belong to another person and not Kume, since a diseased heart would free the prison guards who beat him from murder charges, and they would be punished only for the beating.
Macabre mistakes like this have happened before in the Athens’ morgue and other hospitals. The most recent case with international proportions was when an American diplomat committed suicide and the body was sent to the USA without the heart. The heart was sent one month later, and it wasn’t his. The US Embassy reacted and a Greek coroner is under investigation.
