The US state of Florida, where lives a big community of Albanians, is
threatened today by the strongest hurricane of the century in the
Atlantic, called Irma.
Despite warnings from the authorities for the evacuation of 5.6 million persons, many of them have decided to stay, convinced they can handle the situation at home.
The Albanian Ambassador to the USA, Floreta Faber, expressed on Facebook the concern of Albanians in the USA.
“I have tried to keep contacts with the representatives of Albanian organizations in Florida. Few Albanians have left their home, most of them believe they can handle the situation”, Faber said.
Fatmir Cuka is one of them. He wrote of Facebook that he has secured food, generators and doesn’t fear the hurricane.
Faber appeals citizens to follow the instructions of local authorities, while Florida residents have not forgotten Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and the destruction it brought.
Irma may be even more violent, since it is twice bigger than Andrew, as shown in the Caribbean Islands.
