Prime Minister Edi Rama has confirmed the news that Albania has accepted the US request to shelter Afghan citizens, whose lives are endangered by the Taliban after their recent takeover of power there.

Albania and Kosovo immediately responded to the United States’ call to help Afghans in danger.

Reuters reported on August 13 that the US Government has held secret talks with Albania and Kosovo to temporarily shelter Afghans who have cooperated with US forces in Afghanistan, until the process of approving their US visas is completed.

Sources told Reuters that the United States had offered Kosovo and Albania economic and political benefits for the sheltering of several thousand Afghans.

But US diplomats have said there are concerns in Washington about Kosovo’s ability to house the Afghans.

The US Embassy in Pristina and the Government of Kosovo have not responded to questions as to whether such a request was made to the authorities in Pristina.

PM Rama writes that he hopes that the government of Kosovo will respond positively to this request.
