Albania became the first country to ratify the adhering of Montenegro in
NATO. The MPs voted almost in unity in a plenary session of this
Thursday, with the participation of the Montenegrin Parliament Speaker,
Darko Pajovic.
But one MP abstained. The Socialist Ledi Shamku explained her stance:
“The Constitution obliges me to defend the rights of minorities abroad. The NATO alliance is meaningful only if we are really allies within this alliance. Hpw can an Albanian and a Montenegrin soldier serve side by side if Albanains’ rights in Montenegro are violated?
Shamku reminded how four Albanian football fans were fined with 230 EUR just because they had the national flag in their car.
“Albanian fans were returning with their car from France, through Montenegro, and they were fined for provoking the Budva holiday-makers”, Shamku declared.
The Socialist MP made it clear that she is not against Montenegro in NATO, but the rights of Albanians need to be respected.
