The Minister of Energy and Industry, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that the
government approved the additional agreement with the German Bank KFW
for building the Kosovo-Albania power connection.
Gjiknuri declared that this was a historic decision that made way to the construction of a power line that has been blocked for years.
“This annex is an agreement with the same financial terms, and was made now due to the delays that took several years, often intentional, to not realize one of the most important priorities, something that goes for all the Albanian sphere, but above everything else, integrates Albania in the regional energy market and creates the necessary infrastructure for integrating Kosovo and Albania in a joint energy space”, Gjiknuri declared.
The head of the Ministry of Energy said that the project is read and that now they are waiting for the funds to start working on the terrain.
The power line connection with Kosovo is a very old project that was blocked after a disagreement between the former government of the Democratic Party and the German Bank KFW, about the winning bid. The conflict peaked with the German bank withdrew from the project after the government insisted to not accept the company that won the tender according to the formula for which they had agreed.
There were accusations for intentional blockage from both sides of the border, saying that the delays were made to favor the Serbian interests in the energy market. The project remained unchanged for several years and it has now started again, after an agreement with the KFW.
