Albania, Italy’s power generator

A recent report of Bankwatch Network, regarding the obligations of the
EU countries for producing and importing renewable electrical power, it
results that Italy will import 23rd of the energy produced by Albania
in 2009 (the best year for energy) until 2016.

The report says that Albania is making many investments for the production of renewable energy, such as hydropower and wind turbines, but Albania will not benefit from these investments.

The report says that Italy is obliged to import 20% of renewable energy from the Balkan countries. There are hundreds of investment projects in Albania, some of them even on small streams.

“It is very dangerous to build hydropower plants in streams that might not have enough water in several periods of the year. This will have an environmental impact and the production will not justify the environmental cost that we will pay. The investments in Albania have not been efficient”, Dedej declared.

Environmentalists say that these projects of renewable energy must bee seen carefully, since some of them will bring a great damage to the biodiversity, and Albania will keepn importing high-priced energy on its account.

“If our energy will keep going to Italy, we will continue importing renewable energy from abroad. We will not turn into a small super-power of renewable energy, but will keep covering our needs from import and our renewable energy will be exported. For as long that Albania doesn’t cover its own needs with energy, we don’t have to sell it. We must use our resources for our people, not for other goals”, declared the environmentalist Dedej.

The report financed by the European Union says that the “Moncada” energy group in Italy is financing the Karaburun wind turbines project and the construction of a line for transmitting energy from Vlore to Brindisi, Italy.
