The Albanian Customs data show that for every new car, 16 used ones have entered the Albanian market, and the same tendency has followed in the past three years.
The average age of cars in the EU is 10 years. In Albania, it is 20. More than 80% of the vehicles circulating in our country have been produced before 2007, turning into the main cause for air pollution.
There is no law that blocks the import of older cars in Albania, as long as they don’t cross the pollution parameters. But the older the vehicle, the higher is the allowed parameter.
The higher taxes which should encourage the import of newer cars is almost invisible.
Countries such as Switzerland and Germany are planning to remove diesel cars from circulation. Albania, on the other hand, has no limit even for importing older cars.
