Albania fails with EU candidate status

Albania will lose the EU candidate status even this time. The EU
Ministers will not give green light to our country in the next week
meeting.

This was confirmed by diplomatic sources at the Euractiv website, an independent portal specialized on EU issues. Same sources say that the EU could open way to Serbia, if they will fulfil some conditions, such as improving the relations with Kosovo. Netherlands has opposed the EU candidate status for Albania, while the meeting in Brussels is focused exactly on enlargement.

Quoting the western diplomats, the site says that no decision is predicted for Albania. They add that the country must do more to get qualified, especially regarding the 12 criteria underlined in the October report.

The way how the elections will be held is a special concern for the EU. Since the elections are on June, there are fewer chances that the decision will be taken before EU is ensured that the elections of 2013 will have democratic standards and that the voters will be able to elect a new Parliament and a government without the earlier tensions. On the other hand, Brussels are expected to pass the text for Serbia and will start the negotiations for this country, based on conditions that for Belgrade are not new.
