The voting process for electing the people that will govern Albania for the next four years has just started.
The voting centers opened at 07:00, where 3.271.885 Albanians will be allowed to express their political will. This figure was brought from the national electronic register. 19 special voting centers have been established even in prisons, with 5000 prisoners who will vote from their cells. 150.000 people will vote for the first time.
The Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission, Lefteri Lleshi, symbolically opened a voting center in Tirana, around 07;10.
“I appeal the Albanian people to vote in masses, free and secretly. I appeal the commissioners to do their job according to the Electoral Code and leave aside the political influences”, Lleshi declared for the media after voting.
Albania is divided in 12 districts. There are 66 parties running, and two independent subjects. The political parties have been grouped in two coalitions: “Alliance for Employment, Welfare and Integration”, led by the Democratic Party and the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha; and the Alliance for European Albania, led by the Socialist Party and their leader, Edi Rama. The Tirana district will bring the highest number of seats, 32 in total. The smallest is that of Kukes, with 4.
This process is the most observed by the international community. There are 8000 local observers and 1000 foreign ones.
Police says that theya re guarding 5508 voting centers, by engaging 6200 police officers.
The Central Election Commission announced that the distribution of materials and ballots has been distributed successfully in 89 Zonal Election Centers. The Chairwoman of this Commission appealed commissioners throughout Albania to cooperate.
